Amidst all of the baby planning and baby showers that took place over the past nearly 10 months (!), nearly all of the gifts we received were either for the baby or for me so I decided that I wanted to do something really special for my husband on Valentine’s Day. I chose Valentine’s Day because our baby’s due date is JUST around the corner and I thought it would be a fun surprise for him. This new dad gift has been in the works for a few months as I started compiling a selection of new dad gear over the holidays, with the intention that I would package it all together in a diaper bag I purchased just for him.
If you’re looking for some ideas and inspiration for a gift for new dads, here’s what I included in my husband’s gift:
Graco Gotham Smart Organizer System Back Pack Diaper Bag – I have a feeling my husband will be a pretty hands-on dad, and I didn’t think he’d appreciate carrying my girly Marc Jacobs diaper bag. This bag seems to have a little bit of everything including a changing pad, insulated pocket to help keep bottles cool, a dedicated wipes area, and myriad internal and external pockets. A friend told me you can never have enough pockets in a diaper bag and this bag has plenty!
Between Me and You Dad Book – I purchased these questionnaire books for our parents for Christmas, and later picked up versions for me and my husband. These are keepsake books that get filled in detailing the history of the recipient. Questions include things like what did you want to be when you grew up and what kind of music you listened to as a teenager, among many others. I hope our kid enjoys looking through the collection of memory books he/she will receive one day!
Just Me and My Dad by Mercer Mayer – I used to love the Mercer Mayer books and my husband is looking forward to reading to the baby so this seemed like a must!
My Dad Loves Me! Board Book – My husband loves polar bears, so I couldn’t resist this board book!
Michigan Wolverines Baby Bottles – We received surprisingly little Michigan gear, which is both mine and my husband’s alma mater, so I thought a few extra items were necessary. We will have 5 of these Michigan bottles, but I have a feeling they’ll become a favorite for my husband.
Chewbeads MLB Gameday Teether – My husband roots for all professional sports teams from Michigan, but the Detroit Tigers are his favorite. I can envision the baby will get a lot of use out of this teether this summer as they watch Tigers’ games together!
Michigan Pacifier with Clip Set – This gift for dad wouldn’t be complete without a Michigan pacifier and clip, which will keep the paci secure when they’re on the go!
Vosges Haut-Chocolat Bacon Caramel Toffee – I gave my husband this gift for Valentine’s Day so I wanted to make sure I threw in some of his favorite candy!
Dad’s Root Beer – My husband does love root beer, but I couldn’t resist that this one is called “Dad’s”!
Brewery Vivant Bon Papa Beer – I was on the search for a beer with some derivative of “dad” in the name and my friend in Grand Rapids pulled through with Brewery Vivant’s Bon Papa Beer.
Pampers Sensitive Wipes Travel Pack – This is pretty self-explanatory! While I didn’t pack any diapers in this daddy diaper bag because I wasn’t sure about sizing, I figured I would at least start him off with some wipes.
Hearos Earplugs – Paternity leave is short and I figure earplugs will come in handy on those nights he NEEDS to get some sleep and the baby isn’t cooperating.
Munchkin Arm and Hammer Diaper Bag Dispenser – Truthfully I don’t know if these bags will come in handy at all but I thought he would get a kick out of them because they’re similar to doggy poop bags and heaven knows we go through enough of those with our two pups!
Show Dad How: The Brand-New Dad’s Guide to Baby’s First Year – This was actually the item that launched my idea of compiling a gift for new dads for my husband. I spotted this book before Christmas, purchased it, and then purchased the other items. This book is pretty funny but it also contains some practical information.
Rockabye Baby! Lullaby Renditions of Eminem – My husband only listens to rap music and I kept joking to him that he would need to start listening to something a little more baby-friendly. Enter in Rockabye Baby! where they take popular music and make it baby and kid-friendly. The last concert my husband and I attended together was the Eminem and Rihanna concert in Detroit last summer so I think he’s going to enjoy this!
Dad’s Playbook: Wisdom for Fathers from the Greatest Coaches of All Time – My husband is a sports nut so including this book was a must!
Not pictured above: Lifesavers Hard Candy and Pop Rocks.
Amazingly enough, I WAS able to fit everything into the diaper bag, which makes me think that this bag will be big enough to carry plenty of gear over the next couple of years!
