There’s absolutely no denying that I’m a grump about Halloween, though I did give in and purchase a costume for my son. I got him a puppy costume not because we had Halloween plans (although we do now) but because I wanted to take a photo of him in his costume nestled between our two real puppies, Bacon and Ginger.
I was also at Target this past weekend and thought that I should get him a Halloween book. I stared at the display of children’s Halloween books before deciding on Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson.
I didn’t know anything about this book prior to purchasing it. I didn’t know that the author was the same one who wrote The Gruffalo. All I knew was that it had a cute cover, a paperback and a board book edition, and it was almost sold out. I didn’t want to get a possibly abridged version, so I bought the paperback copy.
Over the past few days this has become one of my absolute favorite books to read to my son! In fact, we read it twice yesterday! It tells a cute story about a witch riding around on her broom rescuing animals, and then how they come to help when she needs to be rescued from a dragon. The illustrations are cute and the rhyming is amazing. In fact, the rhyming is so good that I find myself getting really into telling the story. I use different voices and speak louder and softer as the story calls for it, and both my son and I get a kick out of it.
I originally intended Room on the Broom to be a Halloween book that we’d pull off the shelf every October, but we enjoy this book so much that I’m going to keep it in the rotation year-round!
