I have a lot of baby and children’s books that are old favorites, but newer books are a bit of a mystery to me. My mom gave us The Book with No Pictures at my baby shower and I was really puzzled. While I had heard about the release of this book I had automatically assumed that it was a book for adults. After all, why would children want a book without pictures? And why would B.J. Novak – most noted for his work on The Office and for being Mindy Kaling’s BFF/sometimes boyfriend – write a children’s book?
It turns out I was wrong, and not only is The Book with No Pictures a children’s book, but it’s an absolutely darling book at that! It asks that kids, instead of focusing on the illustrations, focus on the words. It asks that parents really engage with their kids by using funny voices to say the funny words. After all, as the book says, “Everything the words say, the person reading the book has to say. No matter what.”
I imagine little ones cracking up when their parents say things like “I am a robot monkey,” “…my head is made of blueberry pizza,” or words like “grumph-a-doo.” I imagine parents cracking up right along side of their little ones.
This is not a board book (though I hope they release a board book version!), so this book is best for kids that are a little older and have graduated from the “stick every book in their mouths” stage. It is recommended for kids between the ages of 5-8.
The Book With No Pictures costs $10.79 at Amazon.
